Descriptions of the Zircon Gemstone
The gem has a hardness value of 7.5. It comes in brown, red, yellow, green black and white colors. The color that we carry and the most common color is blue. Sometimes fluorescent and darker ones may actually be radioactive due to impurities of rare earth elements. The gem stone is actually very uncommon if you go to a rock shop or even at most mall jewelry shops because very nice attractive specimens are rare. Go to the top of the blue zircon gemstone page.
When one thinks of a blue zircon the most common question is "is it a fake stone" the word zircon got a bad reputation size most thing of the word CZ or fake. In fact the zircon can be real expensive. In order to take out the radioactive elements of the stone it is heat treated. White zircon's are actually a great substitute for the diamond and we are seeing more and more mountings with these white stones.
Zircon is one of the heaviest gemstones, which means that it will look smaller than other varieties of the same weight. Zircon jeweler should be stored carefully because although it is relatively hard, zircon can suffer from abrasion and the facets can be chipped. Dealers often wrap zircons in individual twists of paper so that they will not knock against each other in a parcel. The wide variety of colors of zircon, its rarity, and its relatively low cost make it a popular collector's stone. Collectors enjoy the search for all possible colors and variations. |
